Tucked away behind a wrought iron gate, down a flight of stairs behind a pizza joint you will find, if you’re lucky, a 15 year old Chicago destination. Geographically situated in Old Town but possibly a bit of Gold Coast and a little Lincoln Park as well is the Chicago underground love, formerly known as Katacomb, now Amp Rock Lounge. After being shut down for renovations last year Amp Rock Lounge emerged as a smooth transition from the former venue with intense green bars and legendary rock stars gracing the walls. Much like the old hang out this place has the right feel with a slice more edge. 40oz beers in the hands of 20 something musicians from the south side flirt with glowing guitar martinis held by north side anonymous club goers, the scene is legit. The couches in the back room are full and echoes of the band from the main room slide through the dim lit hallways. After 2am the surrounding bars close and Amp stays open, bartenders and waitresses just cut from their gig file in, the band wraps up and the dj starts spinning, the rest is easy. With local bands and big DJ’s setting the tone the venue need only accentuate the mood and that’s exactly what it does, clean, crisp and underground this music venue is not like others. The new owners all under 26 years old would like to think that they have created a fresh face for intoxication in Chicago with amplifiers buzzing and pungent drink they leave you with this quote by hank ballard father of rock n roll “If you’re looking for youth, you’re looking for longevity, just take a dose of rock ‘n’ roll. It keeps you going. Just like the caffeine in your coffee. Rock ‘n’ roll is good for the soul, for the well being, for the psyche, for your everything. I love it. I can’t even picture being without rock ‘n’ roll.” And we can’t picture Chicago without Amp, it’s a dose of youth and feel good nightlife that you’ll wish you did but probably won’t remember.
